Colchester Tavern Licenses

Colchester Tavern Licenses

Archibald Campbell was one of the first tavern owners to be issued a Tavern License in Colchester.  Campbell operated a tavern on top of Cat Hollow off the Roscoe-Downsville Road behind the swamps.  He sold whiskey by the jug and that is how the road down onto Campbell Mt. Road became known as Jug Tavern Road.  The fee for the license in 1799 was 50 pounds.

By 1800, Tavern License fees had risen to 125 pounds.   With the growth of Colchester Township between 1800 and 1806, fourteen Tavern Licenses were issued in Colchester.  Some of these included John Moore in Colchester village, Isaac Wilson on Wilson Hollow Road, Abel Downs in Downsville, Henry Roff, Benjamin Sands, John Duzenberry, John Hitt, Joseph Wood, James Wright, Gilbert Early, Abraham Jessup and Nathan Fuller all were listed as operating taverns throughout Colchester Township.
